We wanted to share a quick video with you that demonstrates the main steps to our throwing progression at Elite. This is how our teams play catch to get ready for baseball games, practices and workouts. Making the most out of catch play is vitally important for all positions on the field. For pitchers at least 80% of your throws will come in catch play, versus live games or bullpens, so take it seriously and make the most out of it.
Elite Throwing Progression Details
Arm Pulls x 9 - Partners should get 15 - 20 feet apart from one another. For older players, they should mix in their secondary pitches and do 3 of each type of pitch.
High/Low x 9 - Partners should get 20-25 feet apart from one another. For older players, they should mix in their secondary pitches and do 3 of each type of pitch.
Power Stance - Partners should get 25-30 feet apart from one another. For older players, they should mix in their secondary pitches and do 3 of each type of pitch. An alternate variation is to finish your back foot.
Rhythm Throw - Partners should get about 3 feet shy of pitching distance apart from one another. For older players, they should mix in their secondary pitches and do 3 of each type of pitch.
Base Distance Throw x 8- Partners should get to their approximate age group base distance and step and throw to their partner. The receiving partner can also work on catching and tagging if they are an infielder. Alternate variation - the player can work on simulated position throws, for example, they can act like they are fielding a ground ball and throwing.
Long Toss x 8 - Partners should get to a distance where they are working hard to make throws to each other and push their arm strength, but where they can also get the ball to their partner on a line, small arc, or a good one hop. Players should be using one shuffle to make this throw. We want to avoid big arcing throws. Alternate variation - outfields can simulate fielding threw the baseball and crow hoping to make the throw.
